Harold The Worrier
(AudioBook Option):
Long ago when dinosaurs roamed
no beast had any worry
except for Harold, the Stegosaurus
who could worry about just about anything.
He worried about cracks
(they break mothers’ backs!)
He worried about shoes
(so easy to lose!)
He worried about time
(never enough, he’d always find.)
But what Harold worried about
most of all
was love
and how in the world he would find it?!
He’d seen it at the Dinoplex, up on the big screen,
and read about it in books, and sometimes magazines.
He’d even felt it – just a glimmer once –
at the 6th grade dance
when that cute raptor smiled at him.
(Then he worried maybe he’d just imagined that.)
And so Harold continued his fretting.
How would he ever find love???
What if he loses his SHOE???
Oh NO! Another CRACK?!
“I’m doooooooooooomed!!!!”
Luckily,
his mom knocked on the door just then
with some cycad cookies and moss milk.
“Wanna talk?”
‘Not really,’ thought Harold.
But then something magical happened.
He decided to listen instead.
(And eat more cookies, of course.)
“Harold, you have a big heart and so much love.”
<crunch, crunch> says Harold, still listening.
“The only way
to find what you seek
is to learn to trust
those two things in you.”
<crunch, crunch> says Harold, then a pause.
“What do you mean?”
“Inside of you is a heart.
More than your physical heart.
An intuition. A wise mind.
A guide. Whatever you call it,
it’s there.”
“What does it do?”
Harold crunches and slurps some moss milk.
“It’s the compass that points you
in the right direction.
So you don’t have to worry anymore.”
No more WORRYING??!
What would that life look like???
SAILING to school…
(see ya later, cracks!)
Rockin’ new shoes
(got nothin’ to lose!)
Fallin’ in loo-o-oooo-whoa-whoa
“Now wait a minute,” Harold says between slurps.
“If my heart is the compass, where do I find love?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” says Mom,
taking a cookie herself.
“It’s always inside you,
and you wanna know the best part?”
“What?” Harold’s eyes were as wide as the moon.
“It’s unlimited. Never-ending.
Infinite. And self-replenishing.”
Harold sat in deep thought for a moment.
“Like never-ending refills?”
“Just like never-ending refills” Mom nodded.
“Mom –
if love is like never-ending refills
and my heart always knows what’s right,
what is there to worry about?”
“Precisely my point, sweet Harold.”
And she kissed him on the head and sent him off to brush his teeth.
